Standard Desktop Configuration

Challenge

  • Do you have mandates to move to a standard desktop configuration?
  • How will you get to a single image?
  • How will you deploy software on machines that are remote or require hands-free deployment?
  • How will you upgrade your legacy applications to work with the new operating system?

Multiple operating systems, each with different patch and service levels, can make an organization's common operating environment complex and difficult to manage. This complexity demands increased knowledge from your IT and support staff who are responsible for maintaining a heterogeneous environment and increases the possibility of security issues.

Solution

Software management is the process of managing your applications throughout their lifecycle, including preparation, deployment, management and support, patching, upgrading and retiring. Wise Package Studio® and Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution™ (SVS™) software are two keys components of a successful software management process.

SVS is a revolutionary new technology that allows applications to be deployed and run on a machine without altering the host operating system or conflicting with other applications or corrupting the deployed image. No longer do administrators have to install, uninstall, or reinstall applications on the machine. Once the SVS agent has been deployed to the target PC, all software virtualization capabilities can be performed.
The benefits of a virtualized application are tremendous:
  • On-demand application provisioning including instant activation, deactivation, or resetting of applications
  • Eliminate application conflicts
  • Run multiple versions of same application side-by-side on PC such as Office 2000 and Office 2003
  • Significantly reduce testing time
